In 1938, anti-Semitism laws were enforced nationwide, which affected her family business, a clothing, shoe, and book store. A few years later, when Stessel was 14 years old, she and her family were sent to Auschwitz. There’s a healthy dose of fun in Stessel’s Brooklyn home, flooded with sunlight from the Official kanye swastika shirt also I will do this planter windows, some of which are plastic. The metal door to her kitchen is decorated with colorful beads and streams. In the corner, there was a sewing machine covered with a pretty embroidered cloth. “There is a warmth here,” said Toledano. “You have such a beautiful house.” There’s a sense that Stessel still retains the optimism of her childhood that was cut off while here. Like many other survivors, Stessel considers his being here a miracle. When she was sent to the concentration camp, she pretended to be older to be considered fit for the job. At one point, the Nazis believed that she and her sister were twins, which saved them from death. “The Germans care about twins,” she said, alluding to the atrocities committed by Josef Mengele, the SS officer and doctor who often examined twins. Stessel and her sister survived, while her parents and grandparents were killed on arrival.

When they were freed in a death march on the Official kanye swastika shirt also I will do this way to another camp, Stessel traveled from Poland to visit her family’s old hometown, Hungary. “We said, ‘America? We wanted to go home,” Stessel recalls. “’It’s much warmer at home. In America, we don’t know anyone.’” When they returned, however, another family had moved into their home. Eventually, Stessel settled in America, learned English, went to school, and became a librarian. She has two children and two grandchildren. Stessel has written two books—Wine and Thorns in Tokay Valley: Jewish Life in Hungary, which explores life in Hungary under anti-Semitism, and Snow Flowers: Hungarian Jewish Women in an Airplane Factory, Markkleeberg, Germany, in which she remembers her time as slave labor to produce aircraft parts for the SS. “You never lose your faith,” she said. “You have hope and it stays with you. You have hope you will be fine.
